Ottawa, December 21, 2018 – The Canadian Hydropower Association (CHA) congratulates the federal government on its climate change leadership, reflected in the Clean Fuel Standard Regulatory Design Paper released yesterday, December 20th. This marks tremendous progress and positions Canada to achieve significant emission reductions associated with the use of cleaner fuels and electrification of road vehicles.
President of the CHA, Anne-Raphaëlle Audouin, made the following statement subsequent to the announcement by Environment and Climate Change Canada: “Hydropower represents more than 60% of the electricity generated in Canada, powering millions of homes and businesses coast-to-coast. Hydropower is one of the key components of Canada’s clean-energy future, and is essential to ensuring we meet our decarbonisation objectives. The use of renewable non-emitting energy like hydropower to electrify transportation and other activities under the CFS is clearly a move in the right direction”.
The Clean Fuel Standard is one of the most important emissions-reduction policies in Canada’s fight against climate change. With the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 million tonnes annually by the year 2030, it is promising to see that electrification continues to be an essential component to Canada’s clean energy future.
According to the design paper, companies and individuals will have flexibility to comply through different actions such as switching away from fossil fuels by choosing electric vehicles or cleaner fuels; or by investing in more efficient processes that pollute less. Furthermore, the Clean Fuel Standard will open new opportunities for Canada’s clean energy sector and for clean technology companies across the economy.
